South Carolina was created in 1710 when King Charles I divided the Carolina territory into two states, north and south. The first permanent English settlement was near Charleston, and the sub-tropical weather and fertile soil attracted settlers from many parts of Europe, establishing plantations of rice and indigo throughout the coastal lowcountry. The plantations flourished due to slaves brought in from Africa to provide labor (by 1720 they formed the majority of the population). As a result, South Carolina was one of the richest colonies in the New World by the time of the American Revolution. The colony provided many leaders in the fight for independence, and more Revolutionary War battles and skirmishes were fought here than in any other state.

Major engagements included Sullivan s Island, Camden, Kings Mountain, and Cowpens. South Carolina became the eighth state of the union, ratifying the US Constitution on May 23, 1788. South Carolina suffered greatly in the Civil War. Nearly one fifth of the white male population was lost. Then Union General William T. Sherman marched through, burning plantations and most of the city of Columbia. Reconstruction was harsh, and the economy was slow to recover. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the textile industry had discovered the state, and other manufacturers followed. Tourism became a major business as travelers discovered the state s natural wonders. Then, on September 21, 1989, Hurricane Hugo struck, devastating coastal regions once again.
